MMKN
The brief
MMKN is a Lebanese non-profit working to transform education for public school students. It was turning fifteen, and fifteen years is an awkward thing to film. The work is not one dramatic intervention but thousands of small ones spread across schools and volunteers over a decade and a half, and the results only become visible when you add them up.
Production approach
Fine Line produced the documentary in Lebanon and built it around the people who can actually account for that period. The film carries interviews with MMKN’s president, Ghada Feghali, alongside school principals, current students and former beneficiaries who have since moved on. Putting a former beneficiary next to a current student does something a narrator cannot: it shows the same programme at two points in a life.
From there the film traces what MMKN actually does, which is less glamorous than it is durable. Volunteer-driven academic support, customised learning materials, career guidance and STEAM projects. At thirteen minutes it is the longest film in our portfolio, and the length is doing a job. An organisation that works this slowly cannot be summarised in ninety seconds without turning into a brochure.
Outcome
The numbers carry the argument. MMKN has reached more than 23,000 students, and Grade 9 pass rates rose over the period the film covers. Set against a country in sustained crisis, that is a record of academic resilience rather than a growth chart.
The documentary was produced alongside a shorter companion video for MMKN’s Yidan Prize application, so the same material had to work both as a long film for supporters and as a tight case for an international education award.
